Glencoe is one of Scotland’s most dramatic glens with a reputation for outstanding hillwalking, climbing and wildlife watching.

Glencoe (Gaelic: Gleann Comhann) is one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Scotland. The glen is split by the A82 road, often voted as one of the best roads to drive in the UK because of the beautiful and varied scenery as you drive from Scotland’s populated lowlands to the haunting highlands. The Glen is surrounded by wild and dramatic mountains. The main settlement is the village of Glencoe located at the North West entrance to the Glen.

The name Glencoe is sometimes thought to mean “Glen of Weeping”, possibly with reference to the 1692 ‘Massacre of Glencoe’. However, “Gleann Comhann” does not translate as “Glen of Weeping”. In fact the Glen is named after the River Coe which runs through it, and bore this name long before the 1692 incident. The name of the river is believed to pre-date the Gaelic language and its meaning is not known. One possibility is that it was named after a tribe once living in the area; however this remains speculation.
