Out and About in Lochaber and Glencoe

Glencoe & Lochaber

Glencoe is in Lochaber which itself is a region within the Highland region of Scotland. Lochaber and Glencoe is a huge scenic area of the Scottish West Highlands with the popular town of Fort William lying on the shores of Loch Linnhe. Fort William is seen as the Outdoor Capital of the UK!

Ben Nevis, by Fort William is only a short distance from Glencoe. Ben Nevis (Gaelic: Beinn Nibheis) is the highest mountain in the United Kingdom, standing at 1,344 metres (4,409 feet) above sea level. This is the most popular mountain in the UK and although it has a well-marked path to the summit care should be taken and the walk should only be undertaken by well prepared and equipped walkers. The Ben Nevis Race takes place in September with the fastest time up, and down, is an amazing 1 hour 25 minutes 34 seconds!

If you are a motorcycle fan then the Scottish Six Days Trials at the end of April/beginning of May is a must! The internationally recognised Motorcycle trials competition, which has been running since 1909 (with breaks for the two world wars) making it the oldest motorcycle trials event in the world. Motorcycle riders from all over the world compete covering as much as 100 miles a day on road and off-road routes around Lochaber on each of the six days. Please note that accommodation is extremely scarce at this time and we recommend that you book well in advance.

If Mountain Biking is your passion then Lochaber has some of the best routes in the world with Fort William hosting the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup every year in June. For the less ‘white knuckle’ bike rider Glencoe has some fabulous cycle ways.

Skiing in Scotland is always a fabulous experience and the there are two resorts within 16 miles of Ghlasdruim in Glencoe Village. Both the Glencoe Mountain Resort and the Nevis Range by Fort William offer excellent Skiing as well as all year round Outdoor Activities.

West Highland Way is regarded as one of the best long distance walks in the world. The 96 miles (154 km) trail starts in Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow, the Way then winds its way northwards through some of Scotland’s finest scenery towards the Highland town of Fort William famous for Scotland’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. A truly fabulous walk. Ghlasdruim bed and breakfast is an ideal overnight stay being situated near both the stages of Kingshouse and Kinlochleven on the West Highland Way.

Wildlife abounds in the area and it is possible to see the magnificent red deer and if lucky a Golden Eagle. Reports of Pine Marten have been seen in the area are growing.

If you just want to relax and soak up the spectacular scenery then Ghlasdruim in Glencoe is an ideal place for you to stay.

Glencoe also makes splendid base for sightseeing by car or public transport.
